‘Richard Jewell’ Trailer: Eastwood’s Latest Film Tackles the 1996 Atlanta Bombing

Warner Brothers has just released the first Richard Jewell trailer, and with names like Clint Eastwood and Sam Rockwell attached, you know this is going to be an awards contender.

Eastwood usually hits his mark when it comes to biopics. Even when he misses the mark, he can be respected for trying something new (see The 15:17 to Paris).

Eastwood is also known for keeping production on-time and on-budget, and Richard Jewell is no different. The film began shooting in June, and now it’s ready to go for this December. And by the looks of the first trailer, it’ll surely be an awards contender for all involved. Rockwell is on full display here, as is Paul Walter Hauser, who looks like he could be a lock for a Best Actor nomination (especially since many thought he should have been nominated for I, Tonya).

The last few months of 2019 are looking to be an absolute smorgasbord of Oscar contenders. Will Richard Jewell be able to stand out against the likes of 1917, which just revealed it’s going to look as if it was shot in one take, or The Irishman, being hailed as a masterpiece? I guess we’ll have to find out.

Plot Synopsis:

“There is a bomb in Centennial Park. You have thirty minutes.” The world is first introduced to Richard Jewell as the security guard who reports finding the device at the 1996 Atlanta bombing—his report making him a hero whose swift actions save countless lives. But within days, the law enforcement wannabe becomes the FBI’s number one suspect, vilified by press and public alike, his life ripped apart. Reaching out to independent, anti-establishment attorney Watson Bryant, Jewell staunchly professes his innocence. But Bryant finds he is out of his depth as he fights the combined powers of the FBI, GBI and APD to clear his client’s name, while keeping Richard from trusting the very people trying to destroy him.

Richard Jewell hits theaters December 13, 2019.
