A(nother) new Star Wars film is in the works.
According to Deadline, Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will direct an upcoming Star Wars film for Lucasfilm. The Hollywood Reporter has added that Damon Lindelof co-wrote the film’s script with Justin Britt-Gibson, “a young and rising writer who worked as an executive story editor on Guillermo del Toro’s vampire drama, The Strain, and wrote episodes of Starz’s sci-fi drama The Counterpart.
The movie has been secretly in development for months (and rumored for almost as long). While sources state the movie is intended as a “standalone” feature, sequels could happen if the film is successful. Additionally, the film is rumored to “take place after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, although it would not be a continuation of the Skywalker saga.” However, characters from the sequel trilogy could make an appearance in the film.
Lindelof’s film is the fourth major Star Wars film project in development at Lucasfilm after Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron (stuck in development hell / on the backburner), Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy (on the backburner because of Knives Out sequels), the standalone film Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is producing and Loki scribe Michael Waldron is writing (in early early development), and Taika Waititi’s film that he will co-write and direct (he’s still working on the script after two years).
If you want my advice, Lucasfilm, I’d say stick to television.
No word yet on when this film might hit theaters. We’ll keep you posted.
Do you think this Star Wars project will actually see the light of day? What are your thoughts on Damon Lindelof tackling a film set in a galaxy far, far away?
