The CW has found its new
Ruby Rose Batwoman!
Following an extensive open-casting call search for Ruby Rose’s replacement following her highly-publicized exit, The CW has cast Javicia Leslie as the newest member of the Bat Family.
Leslie will play Ryan Wilder, a “likable, messy, goofy and untamed out lesbian, who is athletic, raw, passionate, fallible, and very much not your stereotypical All-American hero (or Kate Kane, the first Batwoman).
Before she earned the role, Leslie starred in the CBS comedy God Friended Me and also appeared on MacGyver. Here’s her statement on the news:
“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.”
I’ve been following this Batwoman casting news since Rose first dropped out. Y’all questioned why I was so invested in this story, and I wondered the same thing. But with Leslie cast as Wilder/Batwoman, it’s time to retire this Batman-related part of the news cycle. Of course, until the first trailer teasing this new take on the character comes out!
Batwoman didn’t garner the best reviews or ratings in its first season which means this new direction could revive the series moving forward. It’s unsure how exactly Ryan Wilder will shake up Kate Kane’s world, but with most of the cast closely related or connected to Kane, it’ll be interesting to see who remains part of the show and who leaves and is never heard from again. How this will effect the Batgirl/Supergirl friendship is also unknown at this time.
Batwoman season 2 will premiere in 2021.
Thoughts on Leslie as the new Batwoman? If you watched season 1 will you watch season 2? Or is Kate Kane’s departure one too many Bat-centric disappearances for you to handle?
