Star Wars Announces ‘The Acolyte’, Set During the High Republic, and ‘Lando’ Series

In addition to announcing two Mandalorian spin-offs, teaser trailers for The Bad Batch and Andor, and confirming Hayden Christensen’s return in Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lucasfilm still had a couple surprises left during its Disney Investor Day presentation.

The studio announced three more series were in development for Disney+ as well as an animated feature film.

First, Dear White People creator Justin Simien is developing Lando, a series starring Lando Calrissian. It is unclear when this will be set or which actor will be playing Lando. My bet would be on Donald Glover reprising the role and having it set between the events of Solo and The Empire Strikes Back. Of course, they could also bring back Billy Dee Williams for an adventure set post-Skywalker Saga. Episode IX did end with the perfect setup for a series.

Next, Leslye Headland‘s secret project turned out to be the upcoming mystery-thriller series The Acolyte. The series will “take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.” The High Republic era is part of Lucasfilm’s latest effort to expand the universe of Star Wars and is set between 300 BBY and 100 BBY. Yoda is confirmed to have been active during the High Republic era, so maybe we’ll see that green fuzzbucket in action again soon.

Lucasfilm is also developing Star Wars: Visions, an original series of animated short films celebrating “the Star Wars galaxy through the lens of the world’s best Japanese anime creators”. It will premiere in 2021. The animated film A Droid Story will be an “epic journey that introduces us to a new hero guided by R2-D2 and C-3PO.” Also, Taika Waititi is still working on a Star Wars film.

What do you think about a live-action series set during the end of the High Republic era? Which actor would you want to see reprise as Lando in the upcoming series?
