‘The Batman’ Casts Andy Serkis as Alfred, Eyes Colin Farrell for Penguin

Variety reports that Andy Serkis has been cast as Alfred Pennyworth in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Meanwhile, Colin Farrell is also being eyed to play the Penguin, after Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen passed on the role (Hill was also in talks for Riddler).

Serkis will be the fifth actor to portray the Wayne butler on the big screen. Michael Caine and Jeremy Irons previously played Alfred on the big screen in the last decade. The Batman also reunites Serkis and Reeves worked on the Planet of the Apes franchise.

The cast of The Batman is growing fast. Robert Pattinson is set to play Batman, Zoe Kravitz will play Catwoman, Paul Dano is the Riddler, and Jeffrey Wright is Commissioner Gordon.

Rumors have The Batman based on “The Long Halloween” arc from the comics, and that the film will feel like a Sherlock Holmes adventure. By this, sources say that Batman is Sherlock, Gordon is Watson, Catwoman as Irene Adler, and Riddler as Moriarty. That definitely has me interested as I love a good detective story.

Filming is expected to start in late 2019 or early 2020. The Batman hits theaters June 25, 2021.

What do you think of Serkis as Alfred, and Farrell as the Penguin?
